Design Technology

Curriculum Intent

At Ainsdale St John’s we are designers and technologists! We want all our pupils to enjoy design technology and embrace it as an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject.  Pupils embark on a design and technology journey to become life-long active learners following the Christian values Jesus has given us.  We believe that our whole school family can “Grow, Develop and Achieve in ALL that we do”. Through high quality teaching, our pupils are given rich learning experiences so that they acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. 

Through a culture of collaboration, children learn how to take risks, become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.  Children evaluate past and present design and technology to develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.

At Ainsdale St John’s we believe that high quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the culture, creativity and wealth of the global community.

 

Curriculum Implementation

The Design Technology curriculum is based on the National Curriculum Programmes of study and has been carefully designed to ensure progression and repetition in terms of embedding key learning,  knowledge and skills.

We use resources and planning provided by Plan Bee and this helps class teachers deliver a rich curriculum which covers all key aspects of design and technology. Through a variety of creative and practical activities children investigate and analyse a range of existing products and are taught how to design, make and evaluate their own ideas and products.

The DT scheme of work is organised into programmes of study for developing practical design technology skills such as reinforcing structures, using a range of materials including textiles, incorporating moving mechanisms and electrical systems in their designs and designing and cooking meals.  

DT is taught discretely but staff also make meaningful links across subjects and link prior knowledge to new knowledge to deepen children’s learning.  We believe that by crafting our curriculum this way, we improve the potential for our children to retain what they have been taught, to alter their long-term memory and thus improve the rates of progress they make.

 

Curriculum Impact

Teachers use formative assessment in lessons and this informs their short term planning and helps them provide the best possible support for children.

Summative assessments are made at the end of each topic. 

Monitoring in DT includes: analysing and reviewing products, learning walks, pupil and staff voice.  Information gathered is used to gain an accurate understanding of the quality of education in DT.
