                                                  Early Years Curriculum Intent

Early Years at St John's is about children becoming confident in who they are and what they can achieve. Unique children who are happy, secure, eager and able to ‘Grow, Develop and Achieve in ALL that they do.' Children are encouraged to take ownership of their own learning and develop this journey through a balance of child and adult led provision. We provide a bespoke environment that is relevant to the needs of our children, encouraging all to work collaboratively, creatively and to think critically. We focus on fostering an ‘I can’ attitude enabling children to ‘flourish and experience life in all of its fullness.’(John 10:10).

In the first few weeks of school we aim to settle children into school life focusing on friendships, routine, play and building relationships in a happy, safe environment. We focus on learning through play and use objective led planning to ensure all teaching is individual. When children are ready, we move from small activity work to whole class teaching and a combination of adult and child led activities. We plan with high expectations and adhere to a whole school positive behaviour system.

Our environment is simple, streamline yet effective. Children quickly become independent in accessing resources and are able to use the classroom to develop our topics. We encourage children to be involved in planning next steps in our topics through the use of a talk box and are currently developing ‘loose parts’ resources within the setting to help develop curiosity and creative thinking. Our outdoor environment is seen as an extension of our indoor classroom and is currently being re-designed to provide outdoor provision to further extend learning.

As a staff we are committed to making seamless links with parents and believe that parents play a significant part in their child’s learning journey. Parents are invited to learning workshops, class events and worships. In addition, we share a Busy Book and Newsletters are sent out regularly to ensure parents are kept up to date.

Please see our Class Page for more information on daily activities with our current Reception Class.
