Spelling

Pathways to Spell is our whole‑school spelling programme at ASJ, providing a clear, research‑based approach to teaching spelling from Year 2 to Year 6. The scheme offers a carefully sequenced progression that helps children develop confidence, accuracy and independence as spellers. It follows a consistent cycle of Review, Explain, Practise, Apply and Reflect, ensuring that new learning is built on strong foundations and that previously taught patterns are regularly revisited.

Each unit includes detailed lesson plans, engaging resources and structured teaching that supports children in understanding spelling rules, patterns and strategies. The programme covers all National Curriculum objectives and also revisits earlier content to address gaps and strengthen long‑term retention. This approach helps pupils apply their spelling knowledge not only in lessons but across all areas of the curriculum.

At ASJ, Pathways to Spell supports our commitment to nurturing confident, capable writers. By exploring words in meaningful contexts and developing a toolkit of strategies, children learn to spell with increasing accuracy and independence. The programme helps us create a community of enthusiastic spellers who enjoy the challenge of language and take pride in their written work.
