Writing

At ASJ, our writing curriculum is designed to help every child become a confident, independent writer who takes pride in their work. We want all pupils—whatever their starting point—to write fluently and develop their own writer’s voice. Spoken language is central to this, as rich talk and vocabulary lay the foundations for strong writing.

Using high‑quality texts and the Ready Steady Write programme, we inspire children to write with purpose, creativity and care. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that skills build year on year, giving pupils a secure understanding of literacy and the tools they need to succeed in school and beyond. We foster a culture where children enjoy writing, present it with pride, and learn to adapt their style for different audiences and contexts.

Ready Steady Write

At ASJ, we follow Ready Steady Write, an award‑winning, evidence‑based writing programme that supports children from Early Years through to Year 6. Built around high‑quality, language‑rich literature, the scheme provides a clear, sequenced approach that helps every child grow into a confident, independent writer.

Each unit is centred on a carefully chosen “vehicle text” that inspires rich discussion, deepens vocabulary, and gives children meaningful reasons to write. Through a consistent teaching sequence—Immerse, Analyse, Plan, Write—pupils learn how great writing works and develop the skills to craft their own. Daily sentence‑level work strengthens grammar, punctuation and accuracy, while modelled and shared writing help children understand how to structure and shape their ideas.

Ready Steady Write is fully mapped to the National Curriculum, ensuring strong progression across all year groups. It supports a wide range of writing purposes, including narrative, explanation, persuasion, instruction and poetry. The programme also places a strong emphasis on talk, recognising that spoken language is the foundation of successful writing.

At ASJ, Ready Steady Write helps us nurture enthusiastic, capable writers who take pride in their work, enjoy expressing themselves, and understand the power of their words. It is a key part of our commitment to providing a rich, inspiring English curriculum where every child can flourish.
