Geography

At our school, geography inspires pupils to develop a deep curiosity and understanding of the world around them, from their local area to the wider globe. Through the study of diverse places, people and environments, children build knowledge of both physical and human geography, learning how landscapes are shaped, how communities live, and how the world is constantly changing. We encourage pupils to think like geographers:

  • asking questions,

  • making connections

  • exploring how places are linked

By doing so, children leave ASJ with a strong sense of place, respect for different cultures, and an awareness of their role in shaping a sustainable future.

Opening Worlds

Our geography curriculum is delivered through the Opening Worlds programme, a carefully sequenced, knowledge-rich curriculum that builds pupils’ understanding over time. Through the study of key geographical themes and carefully chosen places, pupils develop a secure knowledge of the world, including strong locational awareness and an understanding of how physical and human processes interact.

Learning is structured to revisit and deepen knowledge, allowing pupils to make meaningful connections, use precise geographical vocabulary and think critically about change, diversity and global interdependence. Geographical skills, such as interpreting maps, analysing data and undertaking fieldwork, are taught within each unit so that pupils learn to work as geographers and apply their knowledge in purposeful ways.

Working in Partnership

We value strong partnerships with parents to support children’s success in geography. Alongside learning in school, talking about the world, exploring places and encouraging children to be curious about their surroundings can help deepen their understanding and confidence.

How you can help at home

  • Talk about places you visit (local area, holidays, day trips) — discuss what you can see and how it compares to other places

  • Look at maps, atlases or Google Earth together to build locational knowledge

    Continents of the World Song

    Five Oceans Song

  • Encourage children to notice weather, seasons and changes in the environment

  • Watch age-appropriate documentaries or news about different countries or environments and discuss environmental issues (e.g. recycling, climate change) in a simple, positive way

    Newsround Topics: The Natural World

  • Use journeys (car/train) to develop directional language and map skills

  • BBC Bitesize Geography
