At Ainsdale St. John's, we believe that Physical Education is essential for promoting healthy, active lifestyles and supporting children's physical, social and emotional development. Through regular participation in a wide range of sports, games and physical activities, children develop confidence, resilience, teamwork and a positive attitude towards physical activity.

Children take part in two PE lessons each week, where they develop fundamental movement skills, physical competence and an understanding of the importance of health and wellbeing. We encourage all pupils to challenge themselves, celebrate their achievements and demonstrate respect, fairness and sportsmanship.

Our aim is for every child to leave Ainsdale St. John's with the confidence, knowledge and enthusiasm to enjoy being active throughout their lives.

Get Set 4 PE

At Ainsdale St. John's, we follow the Get Set 4 PE curriculum, which is fully aligned with the National Curriculum and designed to develop children's physical literacy, knowledge, skills and confidence. The curriculum provides a progressive journey from Reception to Year 6, enabling all children to build competence across a wide range of physical activities and sports.

Get Set 4 PE is built around the development of both physical skills and the wider attributes needed for success in sport and life. Alongside learning and refining movement skills, children develop the key personal qualities of honesty, determination, self-belief, passion, teamwork and respect. These values are embedded throughout lessons and support children's personal development as well as their physical development.

The curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure that skills and knowledge build progressively over time. Children participate in a variety of activities, including games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and outdoor and adventurous activities. Lessons provide opportunities to develop competence, confidence and creativity while encouraging children to evaluate and improve their own performance and that of others.

Through the Get Set 4 PE curriculum, we aim to develop physically literate children who have the motivation, confidence, knowledge and understanding to value and engage in physical activity throughout their lives.

Working in Partnership

Parents play a key role in helping children develop positive attitudes towards physical activity and healthy lifestyles. Encouraging children to be active every day can improve their physical fitness, confidence, wellbeing and enjoyment of sport. Activities such as walking, cycling, swimming, playing in the park, practising sporting skills or taking part in local clubs can all support the development of the skills learned in PE lessons.

Families can also help by talking about the importance of exercise, healthy eating and looking after both physical and mental wellbeing. Watching sporting events together, celebrating personal achievements and encouraging children to try new activities can help build confidence and foster a lifelong love of being active.

The following websites provide useful activities, challenges and information to support physical activity at home:

We encourage all children to be active for at least 60 minutes each day and to find physical activities that they enjoy. Developing healthy habits from an early age helps children to build confidence, improve wellbeing and establish a lifelong love of physical activity.
