Pupil Leadership: Aspiring to Shine for Justice

At Ainsdale St John’s, we believe every child should know that their voice matters and that they can make a positive difference.

Through our ASJ Ambassadors, every pupil from Year 1 to Year 6 belongs to a mixed-age leadership team for the school year, supported by a member of staff.

Children learn to listen to one another, share ideas, make decisions and work together towards a common goal. This gives all pupils - not just a small group of elected representatives - the opportunity to experience leadership, responsibility and service.

Our pupil leadership has traditionally focused on improving our school and making a difference within our immediate community.

We are now encouraging our children to look further outwards and Aspire to Shine for Justice: exploring ideas such as fairness, compassion, equality, stewardship and how our actions can help others locally, nationally and globally.

Meaningful pupil participation supports children’s personal development, communication, confidence and sense of belonging.

Working alongside children of different ages also provides valuable opportunities to develop teamwork, empathy and responsibility.

Most importantly, our Ambassadors learn that leadership is not simply about having a title - it is about using your voice and your actions in the service of others.

In this way, our Christian vision of “Let your light shine” (Matthew 5:16) becomes something our children actively live out: recognising injustice, considering the needs of others and understanding that even small actions can help to create positive change.
